Jury members will have a scoring form for each work viewed. Some of the qualities to look for while viewing are:

Does the work reflect disability culture in an honorable and honest way?

Is it thought provoking?

Is it an original, creative concept, treatment, story?

Does it entertain? Motivate?

Does it make one laugh, cry, rejoice, get mad?

Does it celebrate?

Other, less subjective criterion will also play a role in the judging: technical proficiency such as lighting and sound quality. As well, postproduction tools that enhance the accessibility of the piece, such as audio captioning and audio description will be favorably scored.

Works by film/video makers with a disability are adjucated no differently, however their entries may be a work that does not have a disability theme.

All award winners receive a Picture this… Film Festival award.

Our award statuette is a clear Plexiglas squarish-shaped plaque standing on a black base, with an appropriate etched inscription on one side. Our 'faces in theatre seats' logo is also etched on.

Two major categories of film/videos are accepted: the first major category is works on the subject/experience of disability AND the second major category is works by film/videomakers who have a disability.
Five basic genre categories include:

  • Documentary
  • Performance
  • Drama
  • Animation
  • Educational

(All above must have a disability theme)

Running time categories are:

  • under 10 min
  • 10 to 30 min
  • over 30 min

Filmmakers who have a disability may enter their work in the appropriate genre, but in their own major category, which is: Films produced by a filmmaker with a disability. These submissions may be on any subject.

i.e. an award may be presented for a Dramatic film that is between 10 - 30 minutes. As well, another award may be presented for a Dramatic film that is between 10 - 30 minutes, AND was produced by a film/videomaker with a disability.

Please note that a film/videomaker who has a disability may decide to submit his/her work only in the first major category which means his/her work will be judged against all other non-disabled film/videomakers. This is ok, as long as their film/video is on the subject/experience of disability. If a film/videomaker with a disability is submitting a work that does not contain any reference to disabilty, they must enter their work in the second major category.

Eligibility and awards are at the sole discretion of the jury chair in consultation with the jury and the festival director.
