Nancy Mairs is nationally
known in the USA as a writer about disability who thinks and composes
from her personal angle of observation, in a wheelchair with multiple
sclerosis. Her highly personal essays complete seven books, most notably
"Waist-High in the World", also the title of this film. Here we see
Mairs speaking at universities, traveling, training her dog to assist
her, talking to college classes; she provokes us to think with her
readings and with her life writ large in her own embodiment. The documentary
ranges fully across the emotional spectrum of both Nancy and her husband
George. As filmmaker, it is my hope and impression that this work
inspires us all. |
